Apple Picking Near The Castle

Posted by editor on 09/21/15

Fall is here and with the cool weather comes fun outdoor activities you can enjoy that you didn’t have the chance to in the summer heat. Apple picking is a staple fall activity especially in New York, and there are several different orchards close by to Port Chester our residents can choose from.

Prime apple picking season starts now and goes through the month of October. Here is a list of many apple orchards that are about a half hour drive from The Castle!

Wilkins Fruit and Fir Farm is located a half hour north from Port Chester in Yorktown Heights. Aside from their apples they also have pumpkin picking which will be in full season next month. The farm also has three markets for you to choose from to shop around for other yummy fall goodies such as apple cider, cider donuts and pies.

Apple picking can be done by parking in their lot and making your way over to their hay wagons. The wagons take you over to the picking field of the day, which changes usually every week based on the apples that have ripened. If you look at their website here you can see the best time to go for different apple varieties! Poles are available to rent to make your apple picking experience fun and easy, and they have bags and baskets for visitors to fill up with as many apples as they can pick!

Stuart’s Farm in Granite Springs is another great local Westchester County orchard. Open seven days a week, they offer special events, tours, hayrides on the weekends and of course apple picking! They also offer a variety of baked goods you can purchase from the onsite bakery. Their website includes more information about all the fun activities, and information about the apples grown on their farm and the best time to go.

Harvest Moon Farm is located close by to Port Chester in North Salem! This farm posts several events throughout the fall, and fall festivals every weekend! The festivals have fun activities visitors can take part in and participate in addition to apple picking which includes hayrides, bounce houses, live music, pony rides, and face painting. There will also be barbecue’s taking place and small farm animals on the farm. They also will hold tastings of select hard cinders and other seasonal beverages which you can find a list of on their website.

If you don’t mind going for a little adventure and making the trip further into the Hudson Valley, there are more orchards that are still less than an hour from The Castle that are great picks for your fall apple picking fun! Here is a list of some more option for our residents to choose from.
