March is Women’s History Month

Posted by editor on 03/03/19

There is so much history right here in Port Chester in and around your lovely Castle apartment. Here are a few notable women who were born and raised right here in Port Chester.

Did you know…?

– American children’s author Jackie Carter, born in Port Chester in 1953, while working for Sesame Street Magazine, Disney Global and Scholastic Corp she made it her goal to provide children of all races with images of themselves in the books they read.

– Both Rachael Sage (1971) and Ruth Roberts (1926) were American songwriters both born and raised in Port Chester. Roberts collaborated on the baseball fight song from 1961, “Meet the Mets” and a song produced by Buddy Holly and later The Beatles. Sage continues her career in music on her own record label. Maybe she will play her hometown at The Capitol Theatre, just a “stone’s throw” away from your apartment door.

Meaghan Francella (1982) is an American professional golfer currently playing on the LPGA Tour. You can spot her on her home turf at The Doral Golf Club, within 10-minutes of your Castle apartment.

Within walking distance of your apartment, you can plan a visit to the Port Chester-Rye Brook Public Library to extend your research on these and other women in history who helped to put your city of Port Chester on the map. The Port Chester-Rye Brook Public Library founded in 1876 is presently located at the corners of Haseco and Westchester Avenues with a 9000 square foot addition created in 1967. Both the Villages of Port Chester and Rye Brook financially support your beautiful library.
